DFGE Appliances Refrigerator — GE Refrigerator DF Error Code
Defrost failure — defrost cycle did not complete successfully
DF is a variant of the defrost fault code (similar to dE) and indicates the defrost cycle failed to complete within the expected time. This typically means the defrost heater ran but could not fully clear the frost from the coils within the allotted time window — suggesting a partially failed heater, a defrost thermostat that cuts the cycle too early, or coils so heavily frosted that even a functioning heater couldn't fully melt the ice in one cycle. On some GE models, DF and dE are used interchangeably.
The same approach as dE applies: remove the freezer back panel and inspect the evaporator coils for frost buildup. If frost is present, force a manual defrost or unplug the refrigerator for 24–48 hours. Test the defrost heater (WR51X10055) for continuity and the defrost thermostat for correct operation. Also check the defrost control timer or adaptive defrost control board if equipped, as a timing failure can cause DF even when the heater is working correctly.
