Frigidaire Dishwasher Not Draining — Troubleshooting Guide
Standing water in the bottom of your Frigidaire dishwasher after a cycle is one of the most common dishwasher complaints. In the majority of cases, the fix is simple and requires no parts — just a few minutes of cleaning. Work through these steps before assuming the drain pump needs replacement.
Step 1 — Clean the Drain Filter
The drain filter is at the bottom of the tub and is the single most common cause of a Frigidaire dishwasher not draining. On most models, turn the cylindrical filter a quarter-turn and lift it out, then remove the flat mesh filter beneath it. Rinse both under warm running water and use a soft brush to remove debris. A filter clogged with food particles restricts water flow to the point where the i20 error triggers. Frigidaire recommends cleaning the filter monthly.
Step 2 — Check the Drain Hose
The drain hose runs from the dishwasher pump to the garbage disposal or sink drain. Pull the dishwasher out slightly to inspect the hose at the back for kinks or crushing — a hose kinked tightly can block drainage completely. Also confirm the drain hose is installed with a high loop under the counter (looped up near the underside of the counter before dropping to the disposal). Without a high loop, wastewater can siphon back into the tub and appear as standing water.
Step 3 — Check the Garbage Disposal Connection
If your dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, check two things: first, make sure the disposal itself isn't clogged — run it for 30 seconds with water flowing before starting a dishwasher cycle. Second, if the disposal was recently replaced or is new, verify that the dishwasher drain knockout plug was removed from the disposal inlet. This is a plastic plug inside the dishwasher inlet port that must be knocked out during installation — if left in place, water has nowhere to go.
Step 4 — Test the Drain Pump
If the filter is clean, hose is clear, and disposal connection is good but water still doesn't drain, the drain pump (154474901) has likely failed. Listen during the drain phase — a pump that hums without draining has a seized impeller (often from a foreign object). A completely silent drain phase means the motor has failed electrically. Access the pump by removing the filter assembly and lower spray arm to reach the sump. Test the pump motor for continuity.
Preventing Future Drain Problems
Scrape plates before loading (you don't need to rinse, just remove large food pieces), clean the filter monthly, and run the disposal before starting the dishwasher. These three habits eliminate the vast majority of drain problems on Frigidaire dishwashers.
