Samsung Dishwasher Not Draining — Troubleshooting Guide

DishwasherSamsung

If your Samsung dishwasher has standing water at the bottom after a cycle, it's not draining properly. This is one of the most common Samsung dishwasher problems. The good news is that most drain issues can be fixed without calling a technician.

Check the Drain Filter First

The number one cause of Samsung dishwasher drain problems is a clogged filter. Pull out the bottom rack and locate the cylindrical mesh filter at the bottom of the tub. Twist it counterclockwise to remove it. Rinse it under warm running water and clear any food debris. For stubborn buildup, soak the filter in white vinegar for 30 minutes before rinsing.

Inspect the Drain Hose

The drain hose runs from the dishwasher to your sink drain or garbage disposal. Check under the sink for kinks, sharp bends, or clogs. The hose must be at a high loop — at least 20 inches above the floor — to prevent dirty water from flowing back into the dishwasher. If connected to a garbage disposal, make sure the knockout plug was removed during installation.

Test the Drain Pump

If the filter and hose are clear but the dishwasher still won't drain, the drain pump motor may have failed. You should hear a humming sound during the drain cycle. If the pump is silent, or if it hums but doesn't move water, the pump motor needs replacement. The most common Samsung dishwasher drain pump is part number DD31-00016A, which fits most DW80 series models.

Related Error Codes

If your Samsung dishwasher displays an error code along with the drain problem, it can help pinpoint the issue. The 5C (or 5E) code specifically means the dishwasher can't drain. The OC (or OE) code means too much water was detected in the tub, which is often drain-related. Both codes point to the same troubleshooting steps above.
