E3Whirlpool Refrigerator — Whirlpool Refrigerator E3 Error Code
Defrost heater circuit failure or defrost heater open detected
E3 indicates the control board cannot complete the defrost heater circuit — typically meaning the defrost heater element has burned out (open circuit) or the wiring to it is broken. Unlike E5 (defrost sensor fault), E3 is specifically about the heater itself not operating. When the defrost heater cannot run, frost builds progressively on the evaporator coils over 1–3 days until airflow is completely blocked and the refrigerator stops cooling. The freezer will appear to work longer than the fresh food section.
Unplug the refrigerator and remove the freezer back panel to access the evaporator coils and defrost heater. If the coils are heavily frosted, allow them to defrost with a hair dryer or by leaving the refrigerator unplugged with doors open. Once defrosted, locate the defrost heater (glass or metal tubular element woven through or clipped near the coil assembly) and test continuity. A working heater shows a resistance reading; an open circuit (OL) means the heater is burned out and must be replaced. Replacement heaters for Whirlpool models typically cost 5–5.
